The ACEC-Utah AMES Committee is working with the Academy for Math, Engineering & Science (AMES) and the engineering community to provide opportunities for students to interface with engineering professionals and gain practical engineering skills and insight. The ACEC-Utah Scholarship is awarded to the AMES each year. In 2003 the scholarship assisted in providing fee waivers for several students and meeting other needs of the school. ACEC-Utah members have the opportunity to provide presentations, internships, mentoring, and learning opportunities to AMES students as well as contributing to the scholarship fund.

ACEC-Utah AMES Committee members and AMES faculty discuss engineering opportunities with AMES students.
January 2004.

AMES, located within Cottonwood High School, is a charter high school that emphasizes applying technology, math, science and engineering. The 250 students currently attending AMES have diverse cultures and academic pursuits, and represent several school districts from the Salt Lake Valley. Students are encouraged to be innovative in their thinking and approach to solving projects and assignments – most of which are done on a group-basis. Computer labs and student study areas dot the AMES campus area – much like a college campus. Classrooms are easily observed through window-laden walls. AMES faculty are dedicated educators and engineering professionals. They are colleagues, mentors, and instructors to the students. Visit www.ames-slc.org for more information about AMES.

Al Church – AMES Principal and CEO and Marjorie Tuckett - AMES Community Connected Learning Coordinator discuss school curriculum and principles with ACEC-Utah AMES committee members. Student study area – January 2004.
